The No Heat Checklist From Charter Home Comfort

5 Fast Checks Before You Call

These quick checks might save you an unnecessary service call:

  • Thermostat – Set to HEAT mode and at least 3° above room temperature.
  • Power – Make sure the furnace or boiler switch is ON and breakers are not tripped.
  • Gas Supply – Gas valve open? Are other gas appliances working?
  • Air Filter – Replace a dirty filter (forced‑air systems).
  • Radiators & Vents – Open radiator valves and vents; clear any blockages.

If these quick checks solve the problem, great — you just saved a service call.

Why We Made This No-Heat Checklist

When your home stops heating, it’s easy to think something is seriously wrong. The good news? Many times, it’s something simple you can check yourself.

This checklist helps you rule out common issues before scheduling a service call. If it solves your problem, great. If not, we’re ready to get your heat back on fast.

Step 1: Understand What Heats Your Home

Most Michigan homes use one of these systems:

  • Gas Furnace: Uses burners and a blower fan to heat and circulate air.
  • Heat Pump: Moves heat from outside into your home (works like an air conditioner in reverse).
  • Boiler: Uses hot water or steam circulated through radiators or baseboards.
  • Dual Fuel Systems: A heat pump for mild weather with a furnace for extreme cold.

Step 2: Go Through This Checklist Before You Call

These steps might save you an unnecessary service call:

1. Check Your Thermostat

  • Set it to HEAT mode.
  • Set the temperature at least 3 degrees higher than the current room temperature.
  • Replace thermostat batteries if needed.

2. Check the Power

  • Look for a switch near your furnace or boiler (often looks like a normal light switch) and make sure it’s ON.
  • Check your breaker panel for tripped breakers labeled Furnace, Boiler, or Heat.
  • Still using fuses? If you’re unsure how to check them, call us.

3. Check Gas Supply (Furnaces and Boilers)

  • Make sure the gas valve near the equipment is open (handle in line with the pipe).
  • Check if other gas appliances (like your stove) are working. If not, call your gas provider.

4. Check Your Air Filter (Forced-Air Systems)

  • A clogged filter restricts airflow and can shut down your furnace or heat pump.
  • Replace it with a clean one if it looks dirty.

5. Check Radiators or Baseboards (Boilers)

  • Make sure radiator valves are open and nothing is blocking them.
  • Listen for unusual banging or gurgling sounds. If you hear them, shut down the system and call us.

6. Look for Error Codes

  • Many furnaces and boilers have an inspection window showing a blinking light.
  • Count the flashes and check your manual, or call us and tell us what you see.

7. Listen and Look

  • Is the blower or pump running? Are you getting warm air from vents or heat from radiators?
  • If you smell gas or hear loud bangs, turn off the system and call us immediately.

What’s Normal for Heating

  • Furnaces: It’s normal for a furnace to run several minutes before you feel warm air. Older furnaces tend to cycle on/off more. Newer high-efficiency models may run longer at lower output to save energy.
  • Heat Pumps: These often blow air between 80°F and 90°F. That’s cooler than body temperature, so it may feel cool even while heating your home efficiently.
  • Boilers: Heat gradually and evenly. Radiators and baseboards may feel warm, not hot, but still heat your home effectively.
  • Very Cold Weather: In extreme cold, even well-maintained systems may run continuously — especially older models.

Safety First

If you are unsure about any step or feel uncomfortable checking electrical, gas, or mechanical parts, stop and call us.
